What is R Shiny?
shiny is a powerful and flexible R package that makes it easy to build interactive web applications and dynamic dashboards straight from R. These apps can be hosted on a standalone webpage or embedded in R Markdown documents. Not only does
shiny allow you to build these web apps from R, but it enables their construction using only R code. Knowledge of HTML and web development is not required at all, though it can be used to enhance your apps in numerous ways. Instructors can utilize
shiny in a number of innovative and useful ways.
To create a new R
shiny App, simply go to “File” (or the “New File” icon) in the upper left corner of RStudio and select “Shiny Web App”.
shiny apps are unlike any other vehicle for R work that you’ve likely used before (unless you have experience with reactive programming. One of the first things to understand is that these applications consist of two primary components: a server and a user interface. When starting a new
shiny application you’ll first be asked to specify three things:
A name for the app
Application type: single file (app.R) or multiple file (ui.R/server.R)
Home directory for the app
The name is more for file organization and documentation than for the app itself. That is, the name of your app does not need to show up anywhere on your app itself.
A single file configuration puts both the server and user interface code in a single app.R file, whereas the multiple file configuration puts them in their own separate files. Functionally, these configurations will produce the same app. The multiple file configuration is generally preferred, especially for larger applications, as it usually makes code easier to manage. For smaller apps, the single file configuration is likely a more efficient way to go.
The home directory of your app is most important for your file management and organization. Your server and user interface will look to this directory, by default, for anything you reference or source within your app.
shiny apps can be deployed in a few different ways. They can be run from their local files in the home directory mentioned above; they can be hosted and run on a server at your organization (e.g. university); or they can even be hosted through RStudio (e.g. shinyapps.io).
What Can You Do with in a Shiny App?
Now that you know how start a new
shiny app within RStudio, the next steps include designing and actually building your app. With R as the base language and data science as the context it should be no surprise that some of the most popular uses of
shiny apps are data exploration/visualization and data analysis. RStudio hosts a fantastic gallery of Shiny applications that you can play around with and see the code for, so that you don’t need to start from scratch.
Iris k-Means Clustering App
Note that this app uses the multiple file configuration as you can view the server.R and ui.R files on the right-hand side of the app page. Despite the numerous resources and documentation about
shiny on RStudio’s site, never underestimate the power of copy-and-paste (a paraphrased quote from Hadley Wickham at the International Conference on Teaching Statistics 2018). The side-by-side code for this clustering application is surprisingly sufficient to get started creating very simple Shiny apps.

Here you’re seeing some other really nice R packages in use for data visualization (e.g.
shiny is able to integrate quite well. You may have noticed that there is no code accompanying this app in the way there was for the iris app. Never fear! Locate and click the “Get Code” button in the top-right corner of the page and all of the code is available via GitHub.
ZIP Explorer App
One last example for today’s blog entry is the ZIP explorer app. The interactivity of the previous two example apps shines (pun intended) so bright, but really comes alive in this app that puts our previously featured package, leaflet, to stunning use.
The data really come alive when you can zoom in, zoom out, click and drag the map around, and then click on individual points to see more information…all within a web page using R code!
